Rapid Assessment Has Been Launched

IOM Ankara launched a rapid assessment in the framework of the project “Combating Trafficking: Turkey, Local Action and Direct Assistance”; the project is jointly funded by the Norwegian and Swedish Governments and has 18 months duration. The assessment will be conducted through interviews with the main stakeholders in the targeted regions including Ardahan, Igdir, Artvin and Trabzon. Interviews will also be conducted with the departments within the Ministry of Interior in Ankara. The project will coordinate the development and execution of local action plans to combat trafficking in persons in the identified pilot communities in line with the rapid assessment in North-Eastern Turkey. Prof.Dr.Sevil Atauz from Hacettepe University, Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences was selected to conduct the rapid assessment.

Data collection continues in BSEC and focusing on Georgia

This project that IOM launched in November 2005 aims to provide a real-time outlook on counter-trafficking trends in the Black Sea Region. The project is being carried out in the framework of Turkey’s membership of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization (BSEC). Data regarding Ukraine, Moldova and Turkey have been tracked and presented through geographically differentiated data sets. The issue of November focuses on Georgia, one of the BSEC member countries. The researchers and the designers are working on the data. The project will draw to a close at the end of January 2007.

Norway Project Supports Shelters

The project on “Combating Trafficking: Turkey, Local Action and Direct Assistance” continues to support the two shelters run by the Turkish NGOs Foundation for Women’s Solidarity (FWS) in Ankara and Human Resources Development Foundation(HRDF) in Istanbul. Beneficiaries are provided with safe accommodation, legal, psychological, medical and social assistance in the shelters. These shelters are the first step along the complex rehabilitation path and the success of the whole rehabilitation process back in the source country is closely conditioned by the assistance that the beneficiaries receive in the shelters in Turkey. The Foundation for Women’s Solidarity has been provided with technical and financial assistance as of September 2006 and Human Resource Development Foundation (HRDF) will be provided with same kind of assistance as of beginning of 2007. The project is funded by the Norwegian and Swedish Governments and co-funded by the Turkish Government.
